Terrestrial Navigation
This is a 2-month survey course with classes on Monday, Wednesday & Friday
evenings incorporating a study of definitions & calculations, line of position
theory, chart reading, plotting positions in terms of latitude & longitude, the
magnetic compass, dead reckoning, voyage planning, using Tide Tables and
List of Lights, principles of radar and GPS, reading light characteristics,
constructing light sectors and vector triangles, etc.
Tuition is $800 payable in 3 installments with equipment provided at a cost of
$100 and consisting of a pair of protractor triangles, a dividers/drawing
compass instrument and two nautical charts.
Five homework assignments and a two-part final examination count toward a
required passing average of 70+% and an academic certificate of completion
which is NOT a licence to carry passengers.
Courses Offered:
Seamanship
This is a course of interest to students desirous of learning to operate a boat
safely.
Seven Saturday classes are divided between classroom lecture time and
practical time aboard the school's training boat.
Topics include hull materials, types of engine installation, safety equipment,
dock & deck hardware, boat handling, tying knots, recovery of man overboard,
towing another vessel, docking maneuvers, types of fires & fire extinguishers,
distress signalling, radio protocol, survival on the raft and ashore, International
Rules, collision avoidance using radar equipment, etc.
Tuition is $700 payable in 2 installments and includes a 24-page set of
printed notes and diagrams.
A final examination counts toward a passing mark of 70+% and an academic
certificate of completion which is NOT a licence to carry passengers.
Celestial Navigation
This course is available upon demand to those candidates requiring a thorough
grounding in this specialized area in order to prepare for commercial licence
exams for ocean ratings.
Methods 229 and 249 are taught over a period of 6 months (one class per
week with some evening and Sunday practical exercises) at a cost of $1,500
for tuition and $300 for equipment which includes a Nautical Almanac, 2102-D
Star Finder, HO 229 Volume 2 Sight Reduction Tables, HO 249 Volume 1 Sight
Reduction Tables (Selected Stars), pair of protractor triangles, dividers/drawing
compass instrument, two nautical charts for plotting exercises and a set of
printed notes.
A final examination counts toward a passing mark of 70+% and an academic
certificate of completion which is NOT a licence to carry passengers.
